Liverpool’s hopes of signing Alexander Isak have been lifted as Newcastle United close in on the signing of a new forward.
With the transfer deadline just days away, speculation over the Swedish striker’s possible switch to Anfield is intensifying. Isak has been heavily linked with the Reds all summer and has even reportedly refused to feature for Newcastle in an effort to force the move.
Despite the pressure, Newcastle have remained adamant they will only sanction his departure once a replacement is secured. That replacement now appears to be Stuttgart’s prolific 23-year-old striker Nick Woltemade, who hit 17 goals in 33 games last season and had also been on Bayern Munich’s radar.
According to Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope, Newcastle have now shifted their search abroad after failed attempts to land Premier League options such as Brentford’s Yoane Wissa and Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen. The Magpies saw two bids for Larsen rejected this week—the latest worth around £55m—with Wolves insistent the Norwegian is not for sale despite encouragement from his camp and agent Jorge Mendes.
Whether Woltemade’s arrival would directly replace Isak—paving the way for his Liverpool transfer—or instead fill the void left by Callum Wilson, who left on a free earlier this summer, remains unclear.
Reports suggest Newcastle could yet return with a final £60m offer for Larsen, though their pursuit of Woltemade may change those plans.
