Marc Guehi’s transfer to Liverpool has hit a major obstacle, even after the Crystal Palace captain successfully completed his medical with the Reds.
Liverpool had just wrapped up their record-breaking signing of Alexander Isak on deadline day and quickly turned their attention to strengthening the defence. Guehi, a key figure at Palace this season, had been high on their list of targets. However, Palace made it clear that they would only approve a sale if they secured a suitable replacement.
For much of the day, progress looked promising. Palace were on course to sign Igor Julio from Brighton on loan, and once the Brazilian passed his medical in London, Guehi was granted permission to undergo his own tests at Liverpool.
But the deal suddenly collapsed when Igor chose to join West Ham instead, completing a medical with the Hammers after being assured of more regular playing time. This unexpected twist has left Palace short of options and unwilling to risk weakening their squad by losing their captain.
Although journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed Guehi’s medical with Liverpool went smoothly, the breakdown of Palace’s replacement deal has cast serious doubt over the move. With the transfer window closing fast, Liverpool are left waiting, while Palace scramble to find a solution.
Palace Rush to Secure Reinforcements
Crystal Palace are now working urgently to bring in defensive cover as Guehi’s future hangs in the balance.
The club is close to finalising a £20.8 million deal for a 19-year-old centre-back from Toulouse, who has already completed his medical. At the same time, Palace are exploring the possibility of signing 24-year-old Serbian defender Strahinja Pavlović from AC Milan. Manager Oliver Glasner is believed to see him as the ideal long-term replacement, though completing such a transfer before the 7pm deadline appears difficult.
Despite the complications, Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett has suggested that Palace will not block Guehi’s move should they manage to secure adequate cover.
As things stand, the saga remains finely balanced — Liverpool are prepared, Guehi is ready, and Palace are racing against time to find the reinforcements that could unlock the transfer.
