Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has revealed how he was overcome with emotion during a tribute to the late Diogo Jota at Anfield. The Egyptian forward broke down in tears as fans chanted Jota’s name following the Reds’ opening-day win over Bournemouth.
Speaking on the Men In Blazers podcast, Salah admitted he “didn’t expect it,” describing the atmosphere as overwhelming and unlike anything he had experienced before.
Jota, 28, and his brother André Silva tragically died in a car accident in Portugal in July, leaving Liverpool’s dressing room devastated. The club later retired his No. 20 shirt to honor his memory, a gesture Salah said carried special weight given their years together on the frontline.
Salah remembered Jota as a “calm presence” who lifted spirits with his positivity and smile. While his absence is felt both on and off the pitch, Salah said the team now plays with Jota in mind: “Every goal, every win, it’s for him.”
