Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has opened up about being deeply moved during a heartfelt tribute to the late Diogo Jota at Anfield. The Egyptian forward broke down in tears as supporters filled the stadium with chants of Jota’s name after the Reds secured their opening-day victory over Bournemouth.
Speaking on the Men In Blazers podcast, Salah confessed that the moment took him by surprise. He described the atmosphere as overwhelming and unlike anything he had ever experienced in his career.
Jota, aged 28, tragically passed away alongside his brother André Silva in a car accident in Portugal back in July. The loss left Liverpool’s dressing room in shock. To honor his memory, the club made the emotional decision to retire his No. 20 shirt—a gesture Salah said carried deep meaning, especially given the years they spent together leading Liverpool’s attack.
Reflecting on his teammate, Salah remembered Jota as a calming figure whose positivity and smile always lifted the group. Although his absence is felt both on and off the field, Salah said the team continues to carry him with them: “Every goal, every win, it’s for him.”
