Viktor Gyokeres recently found himself in an awkward situation when asked about a chant Arsenal fans have created that references his former girlfriend. The Sweden international appeared uncomfortable as a journalist brought up the popular song, which jokingly suggests that he ended his relationship to secure a move to the Emirates.
Gyokeres joined Arsenal in the summer for £63.5 million after a tense standoff with Sporting CP, where he had refused to train. Reports from Portuguese media claimed that he also ended his relationship with actress Ines Aguiar because he did not want any ties to Portugal while pushing through his transfer.
Footage circulating on social media shows Arsenal supporters singing the chant to the tune of Salt-N-Pepa’s Push It. The lyrics playfully state: “He dumped his girlfriend, to play in red and white.” Despite the awkwardness surrounding the subject, Gyokeres has already embraced the strong backing he has received from the Arsenal fanbase.
Speaking to Swedish outlet Sportbladet, the striker expressed his gratitude: “They have been absolutely incredible. They have shown me amazing support both during and outside of games. I am extremely grateful for that.”
However, when asked directly about the chant, the former Coventry City forward paused before offering a short response: “I have no comments about the song.”
Gyokeres has made a promising start to life in north London, scoring twice in his first three Premier League appearances. He is now on international duty with Sweden as they prepare for World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Kosovo.
The 27-year-old will be eager to bounce back after Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Liverpool, a match that sparked criticism of Mikel Arteta’s side for their lack of attacking intent. Gyokeres has already defended his new team following remarks from ex-Arsenal midfielder Freddie Ljungberg, who described the Gunners’ style of play as “sad to see.”
