Liverpool’s plans for a defensive rebuild are set to continue next summer, with Marc Guehi’s future firmly in the spotlight after his deadline day move collapsed.
“Liverpool or Nothing”
BBC Sport’s senior football correspondent Sami Mokbel reports that Guehi made it clear his preference was solely Liverpool. The England international was said to have told those close to him that it was “Liverpool or nothing” if an offer was made. His stance reflects the strong pull Anfield holds — a place where current players are eager to stay and new recruits are keen to join.
Crystal Palace had verbally accepted a £35 million offer for their captain. However, last-minute paperwork issues after the deadline prevented the transfer from being completed, leaving Liverpool officials frustrated by how the deal fell apart.
Glasner Stands Firm
Palace manager Oliver Glasner, who is entering the final year of his contract, managed to keep hold of his captain despite the potential financial gain. He had been consistent throughout pre-season in stating Guehi was not for sale.
Although the defender was nursing a minor hamstring injury during the summer, he maintained professionalism, respected the club’s stance, and did not push for a move. Still, his refusal to sign a contract extension has left the door open for a future transfer.
Liverpool Still in the Lead
Guehi, who played 44 matches last season and played a key role in Palace’s FA Cup triumph, now has just one year remaining on his deal. Palace attempted to extend his contract, but he declined.
Tottenham, under new manager Thomas Frank, have also expressed interest. Yet Guehi’s position is clear — he wants Liverpool, even if it means running down his contract and leaving for free in 2026.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are in need of reinforcements after selling Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. The addition of young defender Giovanni Leoni shows long-term planning, but Guehi’s arrival would provide immediate quality and a potential successor to Virgil van Dijk.
