Chelsea are reportedly preparing another attempt to sign AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, with growing belief inside the club that a pre-contract agreement can be struck in January.
The Blues had already made a move for the French international in June, prior to the FIFA Club World Cup. While personal terms were agreed, negotiations with Milan broke down, preventing a deal from being finalized.
Maignan, who will turn 31 next summer, is seen by Chelsea as a valuable free-transfer opportunity that they do not want to miss. Despite interest from Stamford Bridge, the goalkeeper opted against pushing for a summer exit after the arrival of Massimiliano Allegri, who reinstated him as club captain.
Milan remain hopeful that Allegri’s presence and the club’s improved outlook will convince Maignan to renew his contract, though talks have currently stalled.
In the meantime, Robert Sanchez has delivered strong performances early in the season, keeping two clean sheets in three league matches. However, Chelsea’s long-term plan between the posts continues to center around Maignan.
