Burnley boss Scott Parker admitted he was left “gutted” and “heartbroken” after watching his side fall to another cruel stoppage-time defeat—this time against champions Liverpool.
For the second match in a row, the Clarets saw their hard work undone at the death by a late penalty. Before the international break, it was Bruno Fernandes for Manchester United. On this occasion, Mohamed Salah stepped up to break Burnley hearts.
The decisive moment came when Hannibal turned his back and inadvertently handled Jeremie Frimpong’s cross inside the area. Salah needed no second invitation, smashing home from the spot to seal a dramatic 1-0 win for the league leaders.
“It’s really heartbreaking the way the game finishes for us,” Parker said.
“That’s two weeks in a row now with penalties in the dying minutes that decide the game. We don’t manage to get the result.”
Despite the disappointment, Parker praised his players for executing the game plan almost perfectly against a side he described as “incredible.”
“You can’t open space against Liverpool. They’re deadly if you do. We came in with a plan not to let that happen, and for the majority of the game, we did it very well,” he explained.
Burnley delivered a disciplined defensive display, limiting Liverpool’s clear-cut chances for most of the match. But once again, the cruelest of endings left Parker and his men dejected.
“I’m just gutted for them,” the 44-year-old admitted.
“I’ve had disappointments in sport and in life, but for this group, a point here would have been a powerful moment. There’s a lot to be proud of today.”
