Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has avoided revealing details about his famous post-match exchange with Alexander Isak following the League Cup final defeat to Newcastle United at Wembley six months ago.
When asked again about what was said, Van Dijk laughed it off: “I’m not telling you! Maybe in two or three years I will, but not now. I can’t remember!”
The speculation surrounding that conversation only grew after Isak completed a British record £125m deadline-day move from Newcastle to Liverpool earlier this month.
The Swedish striker, who was left out of Sunday’s 1-0 Premier League win at Burnley due to limited recent game time, has barely played since May. A brief appearance for his national team last week is his only action in months.
After being frozen out at Newcastle and missing pre-season, Isak is still regaining fitness but could be in line to feature in Liverpool’s Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.
Van Dijk, however, made it clear he is simply pleased the controversy around the transfer is now behind the club.
