Liverpool marked their Champions League return with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid at Anfield, but while Virgil van Dijk’s last-minute header secured the points, much of the spotlight fell on debutant Alexander Isak.
The £125 million summer signing from Newcastle United — now the most expensive transfer in British football history — made his first start under Arne Slot before being replaced by Hugo Ekitike in the 57th minute. Despite his brief outing, the Swedish striker’s numbers quickly gained attention online.
According to CBS Sports, Isak managed 25 touches, including four inside Atletico’s penalty area. He attempted two shots, with one on target, created a chance, and completed two passes into the final third — all without being dispossessed once.
Vice-captain Andy Robertson praised the 25-year-old’s impact:
“I thought Isak was excellent. He didn’t have much of a pre-season, but especially in the first half, he was brilliant. Naturally, he got tired, but it’s fantastic to have a player like Hugo to come on. They represent the future of this club, and I’m sure they will only improve.”
Liverpool’s dramatic victory preserved their 100% start to the 2025/26 campaign and gave fans their first taste of what their record signing can offer. Next up is the season’s first Merseyside Derby, with Everton arriving at Anfield this weekend.
