Pau Victor on Lamine Yamal: “He blocks out the noise and stays true to himself”
Former Barcelona forward Pau Victor has showered praise on Lamine Yamal, commending the teenage prodigy for his remarkable focus and maturity amid growing attention and scrutiny.
Speaking to Cadena SER’s “Que T’hi Jugues” program, Victor — who shared the dressing room with Yamal last season before joining Braga — highlighted how the 18-year-old remains unfazed by criticism and pressure.
“What stands out about him is that he doesn’t let criticism get to him. He just focuses on being himself,” Victor said. “If someone tells him not to do something, he might do it anyway — not out of defiance, but because he’s confident in his own game. People will always try to throw him off balance, but he doesn’t listen to that noise. As long as he keeps performing on the pitch, he has every right to enjoy himself off it.”
Victor also described what it was like to train alongside the young winger, emphasizing Yamal’s competitiveness and talent.
“Training with him was incredible. When he decided he wanted to win — whether it was a mini-game or shooting drill — no one could stop him. You just had to stand back and admire it. If he wanted to go one-on-one, he’d take you on and finish. He’s simply different.”
The former Barça man didn’t forget to mention Hansi Flick, expressing gratitude toward the coach for his encouragement and personal attention during their time together.
“I’m very thankful to Flick,” Victor added. “He was always there for me, encouraging me and showing interest in my progress. Even when I left, he told me he’d keep following my journey closely.”
Yamal continues to impress both teammates and fans alike with his fearless playing style and maturity beyond his years — a quality that’s earning him respect across European football.
