Liverpool have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Marc Guehi after Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed the defender’s plans to leave Selhurst Park next year.
The Reds came close to signing the England international on transfer deadline day earlier this season, with reports suggesting a £35 million fee had been agreed. However, the move collapsed after Palace chairman Steve Parish blocked the deal, citing a lack of time to find a suitable replacement.
Parish later revealed to talkSPORT that Palace would have likely accepted the offer if not for their participation in the UEFA Conference League. Guehi’s current contract expires in June 2026.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Palace’s clash with Bournemouth, Glasner stated that Guehi has already made his intentions clear:
“Marc has told us he won’t sign a new contract, so he will leave next year. The club wanted him to stay and offered him a new deal, but he said, ‘No, I want to try something different.’ That’s normal. For us, it’s about how we handle this situation and move forward.”
With the Palace boss publicly confirming Guehi’s decision, Liverpool and other interested clubs are now expected to ramp up their pursuit. The 25-year-old will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs from January, opening the door for European giants like Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich.
Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol has suggested that Guehi could end up in LaLiga, though Liverpool remain firmly in contention. Having nearly landed him earlier this year, Anfield is still seen as an attractive destination for the defender — especially with the Reds dealing with defensive injuries and depth issues.
The challenge now lies with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, who must convince Guehi to stay in England and join the Premier League champions instead of making a move abroad. With Glasner’s comments confirming an impending exit, the race for Guehi’s signature is officially on.
