Ahead of Ajax’s upcoming Champions League encounter with Chelsea, head coach John Heitinga has downplayed the significance of the Premier League club’s massive squad value, which stands at around €1.4 billion.
Speaking to the press, Heitinga acknowledged Chelsea’s quality and tactical strength but insisted his focus remains firmly on his own team’s preparation.
“I know Chelsea very well,” he said. “I’m familiar with both their strengths and weaknesses. They are powerful, fast, and very fluid in their play. Their full-backs often move into midfield positions, which gives them great tactical flexibility. We saw what they’re capable of when they beat Liverpool. You have to stay sharp from the first whistle to the last when facing a team like that.”
Heitinga also pointed out the depth of Chelsea’s squad by referencing former Ajax player Jorrel Hato, who is currently struggling for minutes in London.
“When you look at Hato, who was a key player for us and now finds it hard to get into their lineup, it shows just how strong Chelsea’s squad really is,” he added.
Despite Chelsea’s financial muscle, Heitinga dismissed any concerns about the difference in squad value.
“A €1.4 billion squad doesn’t bother me,” he said. “I’ve never seen a bag of money score a goal. But we know the match will be very tough.”
