Mohamed Salah sparked frustration from teammate Florian Wirtz during Liverpool’s emphatic win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Liverpool ended their four-game losing streak in style, coming from behind to secure a 5–1 victory at Anfield. However, the match began on a worrying note for the Reds when Rasmus Kristensen gave Frankfurt an early lead.
Former Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike equalised in the 35th minute, before Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté both found the net from set pieces to make it 3–1 before halftime. In the second half, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai added further goals to complete the dominant performance.
Salah, who started on the bench, came on in the second half and nearly extended Liverpool’s lead — but one moment drew clear irritation from Wirtz. The Egyptian winger opted to shoot from a difficult angle instead of passing across goal to Wirtz, who was in a perfect position for an easy tap-in.
Frankfurt goalkeeper Michael Zetterer saved Salah’s effort, leaving Wirtz visibly frustrated as he threw his arms up in disappointment. The brief exchange quickly caught the attention of Liverpool supporters online.
Fans took to social media to criticise Salah’s decision-making, with one writing, “Twice in four days Salah doesn’t square it for a Wirtz tap-in. So poor.” Another added, “That’s so greedy from Salah, Wirtz is right there for his first goal.”
Despite not scoring, Wirtz still made an impact by providing two assists — his first for the club — setting up goals for Gakpo and Szoboszlai after coming off the bench.
