Liverpool star Mohamed Salah could be heading for a surprise departure as early as January, according to former Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney.
Speaking on the BBC’s Wayne Rooney Show, the ex-England captain shared a frank assessment of Salah’s recent performances, suggesting that years of carrying Liverpool on his shoulders may finally be taking their toll.
“I just think Salah has played a lot of games over the last few years, and he’s been the main man — he’s carried that pressure,” Rooney said. “He’s probably in the top five or seven Premier League greats, in my opinion. But it looks like it may have caught up with him.”
The Egyptian forward, long regarded as one of the Premier League’s most consistent and explosive attackers, has endured a dip in form this season under Arne Slot. Missed chances, slower reactions, and a lack of the usual sharpness in front of goal have fueled speculation that his best days at Anfield may be behind him.
Rooney didn’t rule out a mid-season transfer, hinting that both the player and the club might soon reach a crossroads.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if in January — or maybe next summer — he does leave the club,” Rooney continued. “I’ve loved watching him; he’s such a fantastic player. But sometimes, you don’t want to admit it’s time, and the next thing you know, you’re gone.”
Salah, now in his eighth season with Liverpool, has been instrumental in the club’s modern success, winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and Club World Cup. However, recent reports suggest that Saudi Arabian clubs could reignite their pursuit of the winger after previously failing to lure him away last summer.
