Reports are circulating that Liverpool’s ownership group, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), may be assessing the future of manager Arne Slot following the club’s recent poor form.
Liverpool suffered their fourth consecutive Premier League defeat with a 3-2 loss to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. Despite a midweek 5-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League, the team failed to build on that momentum. The defeat leaves Liverpool below Manchester United in the league standings, sparking growing concern among fans and the club’s hierarchy.
According to reports from a well-followed account on X, which claims to have inside sources within the club, FSG are “worried” about the team’s performances and may consider making a managerial change if results don’t improve soon. The same source even suggested that former manager Jurgen Klopp could be open to a sensational return to Anfield.
The post read:
“Liverpool’s owners and officials are increasingly concerned about the team’s performances, not just the results. Arne Slot’s position is secure for now, but if performances don’t improve, they will not hesitate to make a mid-season change. Our sources indicate that the club believes Jurgen Klopp might be receptive to returning, although there has been no formal contact at this stage.”
Despite the speculation, other sources have indicated that Slot’s position remains safe and that FSG is not currently planning any immediate changes. Slot succeeded Klopp at the end of the 2023/24 season and led Liverpool to a Premier League title in his debut campaign — a feat that would make a sudden dismissal surprising.
However, Klopp himself has recently hinted at the possibility of managing Liverpool again one day. Speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast with Steven Bartlett, the former manager said:
“I said I would never coach another team in England, which means if I ever return, it would only be to Liverpool. Theoretically, it’s possible. I’m 58 now, so maybe I’ll think about it in a few years. I don’t need to decide today — I can just see what the future brings.”
Football journalist Pete O’Rourke also weighed in on the rumors during the Insider Track podcast:
“I don’t think either side would completely rule out the idea of Klopp returning one day. He’s loved at Liverpool and had an incredible spell there. That said, it’s very unlikely in the short term. Klopp seems happy in his current position with Red Bull, and it would take a major change in circumstances for him to return to management.”
While a dramatic Klopp comeback may be more fantasy than fact for now, the pressure is mounting on Arne Slot to turn Liverpool’s season around quickly. FSG’s patience will likely depend on whether he can stabilize results and get the team back into title contention
