English football’s governing bodies have introduced a new policy that will end the practice of holding minutes of silence for events unrelated to football. According to The Times, the decision marks a significant change in how the sport responds to global issues.
The Football Association (FA), Premier League, and English Football League (EFL) have jointly established a new body — the World Events Working Group (WEWG) — to oversee how the game reacts to major world developments.
The move follows growing concern that moments of silence have become too frequent, potentially diminishing their emotional impact. Going forward, tributes such as minutes of silence or stadium light displays will only be organized when an event has a direct connection to football.
Additionally, the FA confirmed that Wembley Stadium’s iconic arch will now be illuminated only for football or entertainment-related occasions, ending its use as a symbol for global or social causes.
