Liverpool supporters have expressed growing frustration with Ibrahima Konaté following the team’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City, with many urging the club to sell the French defender when the January transfer window opens.
The Reds endured a difficult afternoon at the Etihad Stadium as Pep Guardiola celebrated his 1000th game in management with a comfortable victory. Erling Haaland opened the scoring in the 29th minute, bouncing back from a missed penalty against stand-in goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. A disallowed Liverpool goal was later confirmed offside by the Premier League, as Andy Robertson was judged to have obstructed the goalkeeper’s view.
City doubled their advantage through Nico Gonzalez, before Jeremy Doku’s brilliant strike in the second half sealed the emphatic win.
While the entire Liverpool squad struggled, fan anger was largely directed at Konaté. The French centre-back has faced mounting criticism recently, particularly amid speculation that he could leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season.
One supporter wrote, “Replace Konaté in January, he looks disinterested and his head’s already in Madrid.” Another added, “Konaté needs to go. His passing is poor, his decisions are shocking, and he’s lost all strength.”
Other fans were even more scathing. “When Konaté makes one mistake, ten more follow. He’s a complete liability,” one post read. Another joked, “If Madrid sign Konaté for free, we’ve robbed them.”
