Liverpool forward Federico Chiesa has reportedly turned down a call-up to the Italy national team, according to manager Gennaro Gattuso.
Chiesa featured briefly in Sunday’s 3–0 loss to Manchester City, coming on as an 83rd-minute substitute—a move that left many fans frustrated over the limited opportunity for impact.
Despite his sparse minutes this season, the 27-year-old has already made eight Premier League appearances, surpassing last season’s six, and has doubled his goal tally. Notably, all of these appearances have been off the bench.
Italy manager Gattuso had intended to call Chiesa up for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Norway. With Italy currently sitting in a play-off position in Group I, three points behind Norway, victories in both matches are crucial, particularly given Norway’s superior goal difference (+26 to Italy’s +10).
However, during a Monday press conference, Gattuso confirmed Chiesa would miss both fixtures. “We have to respect the circumstances and decisions each person makes,” Gattuso explained. “There’s nothing more I can add.” When asked directly if Chiesa declined the call-up, Gattuso replied, “Yes. This is the fourth or fifth time I’ve had to explain it.”
The reason behind Chiesa’s withdrawal remains unclear. Although he has faced injury struggles in recent years—including a 14-game absence last season due to a muscle problem—he has been fit throughout the current campaign.
Chiesa’s decision means he will spend the international break training with Liverpool, as manager Arne Slot’s squad looks to rebound from a difficult run of form. The Reds have lost five of their last six league matches and six of their last nine in all competitions.
Despite limited playing time, Chiesa was voted Liverpool’s Player of the Month for September, an honor decided by fans. Reflecting on the recognition, he told Sky Sports, “Last year I didn’t play much, so having the support of the fans again gives me even more motivation. I always try to give everything, every time I’m on the pitch. I think the fans can see that, and I’m happy.”
