The Premier League has released the VAR audio surrounding Virgil van Dijk’s disallowed equaliser in Liverpool’s recent defeat to Manchester City, shedding light on one of the game’s most debated moments. PGMOL chief Howard Webb has now spoken publicly about the incident, describing the decision to rule out the goal as “not unreasonable.”
The controversy arose when Van Dijk appeared to have levelled the score, only for the goal to be overturned following a VAR review. Officials determined that a Liverpool player had interfered with play from an offside position in the build-up, leading to the disallowance.
In the audio released by the Premier League, match officials can be heard carefully reviewing multiple angles before confirming the on-field decision. Webb explained that while such calls often divide opinion, the final ruling fell within the bounds of acceptable interpretation under current VAR protocols.
He stated that the officials applied the laws correctly and took time to ensure the interference in question directly impacted Manchester City’s ability to defend. Webb added that, although Liverpool supporters may feel aggrieved, “the evidence supported the assistant referee’s initial observation.”
The decision ultimately left Liverpool frustrated, as Van Dijk’s header could have dramatically shifted the momentum of the game. Still, Webb’s explanation aims to provide clarity amid growing debates about VAR consistency and transparency in the Premier League.
Liverpool fans, however, continue to express their dissatisfaction, arguing that such marginal decisions too often go against them in key fixtures.
