Karim Benzema Opens Up on French National Team Future and Zidane

Karim Benzema has once again grabbed the spotlight in French football. In a revealing interview with Spanish outlet AS, the former Real Madrid star discussed his international future, his admiration for Zinédine Zidane, and the ongoing speculation surrounding France’s coaching situation.

Speaking from Saudi Arabia, where he currently plays for Al-Ittihad, Benzema emphasized that despite being away from European football, he still closely follows Les Bleus and remains invested in the team’s progress. The interview came shortly after France secured qualification in the latest international break, with the squad looking strong and prepared for future challenges.

Benzema, who last represented France in late 2022 before the World Cup in Qatar, reflected on his complex and eventful national team journey. His international career was marred by the Valbuena sextape case, which kept him away for five years. He returned in 2021, helping France win the Nations League, but injuries and disappointments, including at the European Championship, eventually led to his retirement from international football in December 2022. Despite this, he remains one of France’s top scorers with 97 caps and 37 goals.

When asked about the possibility of Zidane replacing Didier Deschamps as head coach, Benzema praised Zidane’s coaching abilities, calling him “number one” and expressing deep respect. Although cautious about a potential return to the national team, Benzema didn’t rule out the idea entirely, hinting that a future reunion under Zidane could be possible.

At 37, Benzema continues to impress in Saudi Arabia, demonstrating that his hunger and competitiveness remain strong. Whether he returns to Les Bleus or not, his impact on French football is undeniable, leaving fans to imagine a fitting, emotional conclusion to his international career.
