Liverpool may be preparing for an unexpected return to the transfer market this January, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano. After initially signalling that no major winter business was planned, the club has reportedly begun reassessing its position due to a worrying drop in form and ongoing squad issues.
The Reds spent heavily in the summer, investing more than £400 million on a large-scale rebuild after securing their 20th Premier League title. Arne Slot was given the freedom to shape the squad in his own image following his strong debut season, but the extensive overhaul appears to have unsettled the team, with results taking a sharp downturn.
Liverpool broke the British transfer record twice to land Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, while also closing deals for Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, and Giovanni Leoni. These arrivals were meant to offset the exits of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Harvey Elliott, and Jarell Quansah.
However, the transformation has not produced the expected results. Liverpool have lost eight of their last eleven matches in all competitions, exited the Carabao Cup, and slipped down the Champions League standings. Many of the summer signings have struggled to settle, and several established players have found form difficult to regain.
One area of growing concern is central defence. With Ibrahima Konate approaching the final stages of his contract and Virgil van Dijk showing signs of decline, Liverpool are expected to prioritise a new centre-back. While Marc Guehi remains on the radar, reports from Spain claim that the club is eager to finalise a move for Sporting Lisbon defender Goncalo Inacio, who has a £70 million release clause.
Although Romano has not named specific transfer targets, he has revealed that Liverpool’s stance on the January window has changed noticeably in recent weeks. Speaking on the Here We Go Podcast, he confirmed that the club is now open to making at least one signing if the right opportunity arises.
According to Romano, the club originally intended to remain inactive in January, confident in their summer business. But with the team’s struggles persisting more than three months into the season, Liverpool’s hierarchy is now evaluating possible reinforcements. Decisions on which positions to strengthen have not yet been finalised and may depend on how the team performs in the coming weeks.
Romano added that internal discussions have already begun, and the club is weighing several factors such as injuries, market conditions, and long-term planning. While the final outcome remains uncertain, it is clear that Liverpool are no longer ruling out activity in the winter window—and could move decisively if the right deal presents itself.
