Luis Enrique’s stance on a potential future at Liverpool has become more apparent as speculation grows that he could be lined up to replace Arne Slot, should the current manager be dismissed.
Liverpool’s recent form has been alarming. Their 4–1 defeat to PSV in the Champions League on Tuesday marked their ninth loss in 12 matches across all competitions. The downturn has seen the club fall out of the top half of the Premier League table, now sitting below rivals Everton, who recently claimed a 1–0 win over Manchester United.
Slot’s immediate future may hinge on the upcoming fixtures, with difficult away trips to West Ham and Leeds before a home match against Sunderland on December 2. Writing in The Telegraph, Jamie Carragher suggested that Slot might have only three games to change the club’s trajectory, arguing that earning fewer than seven points could make his position untenable.
Liverpool have historically avoided dismissing managers during the season, with only Roy Hodgson and Brendan Rodgers relieved of their duties mid-campaign over the past century. However, The Sun reports that if Slot is removed, the club would first seek to bring Jürgen Klopp back as interim manager until the end of the season.
For a long-term appointment, Liverpool are believed to favour PSG manager Luis Enrique, who led the French club to their first Champions League title last season.
Enrique has expressed interest in managing in England in the past. Speaking to FourFourTwo in 2013, he said he hoped to work in the Premier League someday, dependent on the club and its style of play. In that same interview, he praised the philosophy Brendan Rodgers was trying to build at Liverpool.
Last season, ahead of PSG’s Champions League round-of-16 meeting with Liverpool, Enrique again spoke highly of the club. PSG advanced after a penalty shootout, having won 2–1 at Anfield to level the tie. Before the match, Enrique described Liverpool as one of Europe’s standout teams, highlighting their recent success in the competition and commending the high-intensity, structured style Arne Slot had implemented following the departure of Jürgen Klopp.
