Keith Hackett Slams VAR and Referee Chris Kavanagh After Liverpool vs Leeds

Former referee Keith Hackett has publicly criticized Chris Kavanagh and the VAR system following controversial decisions in Liverpool’s clash with Leeds. Hackett described the officiating as “absolute rubbish”, claiming that Liverpool would have easily secured the win if the referee and VAR had acted correctly.

He went on to say that Kavanagh was “the weapon fashioned against us”, failing to spot key fouls against Liverpool, and called the PGMOL—the body overseeing refereeing in English football—“an absolute joke”.

Hackett’s comments have echoed the frustrations of Liverpool fans, many of whom feel the team was unfairly disadvantaged by a series of questionable decisions. The debate highlights ongoing concerns about the consistency and effectiveness of VAR in Premier League matches, and its impact on pivotal results.
