Manchester United Still Interested in Viktor Gyokeres – Fabrizio Romano
Manchester United continues to be interested in signing Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP, though financial challenges could complicate the deal, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Since his 2023 move to Lisbon, Gyokeres has become one of Europe’s top strikers under Ruben Amorim, who took over at United in November, replacing Erik ten Hag. The Swedish striker has scored 95 goals and registered 27 assists in just 98 appearances for Sporting, showcasing his impressive goal-scoring abilities.
Amorim’s tactical setup—based on a 3-4-2-1 formation—relies heavily on a strong central striker. Gyokeres fits this mold perfectly, a quality that current United forwards Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have struggled to replicate.
Due to United’s ongoing issues in attack this season, it’s no surprise Amorim is eager to reunite with Gyokeres. Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that talks have begun between United and the player’s camp, though no deal has been finalized yet.
Romano emphasizes that Gyokeres has not made a decision, with other top European clubs, including Arsenal, also expressing interest. Any move to United hinges on their summer transfer budget, which depends on player sales and potential Champions League qualification via the Europa League.
Romano notes that Financial Fair Play rules will heavily influence how much United can spend on a striker this summer.
Meanwhile, Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap has emerged as a more affordable option. His £30 million release clause makes him a potential alternative if United’s finances are tight, though Gyokeres remains the preferred target—if the club can make the numbers work.
