Fans Call Liverpool’s Loss to Brighton the “Biggest Fumble” in Premier League History

Liverpool’s dramatic 3-2 loss to Brighton has left fans claiming they’ve witnessed one of the biggest missed opportunities in Premier League history.
The Reds, reigning Premier League champions, fell short at the Amex Stadium on Monday. Harvey Elliott gave Liverpool an early lead thanks to impressive work by Conor Bradley, but Brighton quickly equalized through Yasin Ayari. Although Dominik Szoboszlai restored Liverpool’s advantage, goals from Kaoru Mitoma and Jack Hinshelwood sealed a stunning comeback for Brighton.
All eyes were also on Mohamed Salah, who is chasing Thierry Henry’s legendary 2002/03 record of 20 goals and 20 assists in a single season. Salah has 28 goals and 18 assists this season but hasn’t added to that assist tally in months. With only one game left in the season, fans believe he may fall short.
Henry’s 20-assist record was equaled by Kevin De Bruyne in 2019/20, and Salah seemed poised to surpass it. However, a drop in form has led supporters to accuse the Egyptian star of “fumbling” the record.
One fan posted on X: “That Henry assist record is cursed. Salah was getting goal contributions every week, then suddenly it stopped.”
Another commented: “He had seven weeks to get just two assists and still hasn’t done it.”
A third added: “Salah might miss both the assist record and the European Golden Shoe.”
With just one Premier League game remaining—against Crystal Palace—Salah needs two assists to tie the record and three to claim it outright. He’s also just one goal contribution away from matching the all-time record of 47 goal involvements in a single season.
