Hansi Flick Draws a Line: If Barcelona Can Make Just One Signing, This Is the Player He Wants

German coach Hansi Flick has arrived at Barcelona with a strong vision and clear goals. While fully aware of the team’s shortcomings, he also understands the financial limitations the club faces. In recent discussions with sporting director Deco and club executives, Flick made his position known: if there’s only room for one new signing this summer, it must be a winger.

Flick’s approach is shaped by the financial challenges linked to Financial Fair Play regulations and uncertainty surrounding a €100 million VIP box funding plan. With no guarantee of returning to the “1:1” spending rule, the coach is focused on making the most out of the club’s limited budget. In his eyes, strengthening the wings is the top priority for his attacking strategy.

According to El Nacional, Barcelona’s scouting team is closely watching Nigerian winger Ademola Lookman. He fits Flick’s ideal profile—quick, skilled, and dangerous in one-on-one scenarios, especially from the left flank.

Lookman has stood out this season with Atalanta and remains a financially viable target. His versatility, being able to play on both wings, adds an extra tactical option that appeals to Flick. The coach has made it clear: if there’s only one signing, it has to be a winger.

Despite ongoing discussions about bolstering the defense, Flick has told Deco that the backline is not a current concern. He’s confident in the development of young defender Coparsi, the reliability of Iñigo Martínez, and the presence of Koundé, Eric García, and Ronald Araújo—pending clarity on the latter’s future.

With Lamine Yamal established on one wing and Rafinha dependable on the other, Flick believes a third high-impact winger is essential to provide depth, enable rotation, and maintain attacking versatility—especially amid a packed fixture schedule and potential injuries.

Flick’s directive to the board is unambiguous: if there’s only one move to make in the transfer market, it must be to sign a top-tier winger. The ball is now in Deco’s court to bring this vision to life
