Thierry Henry Urges Arsenal to Sign a Top-Class Striker
Arsenal concluded the 2024/25 season without any trophies, finishing second in the Premier League for a second consecutive year and exiting the Champions League in the semi-finals. A major criticism of their campaign has been the lack of attacking depth, especially after injuries sidelined key forwards Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
Despite these setbacks, manager Mikel Arteta chose not to bring in a striker during the January transfer window. Instead, he experimented with Mikel Merino and Leandro Trossard in central roles — a decision that many now view as a missed opportunity.
Henry Questions Arteta’s Transfer Choices
Speaking on The Overlap podcast with Sky Bet, Arsenal legend Thierry Henry expressed his concern over the club’s transfer strategy. He emphasized the long-standing need for a natural striker, saying:
“When you look at the injuries and the players brought in, he had time to sign a striker. Everyone’s been calling for a No. 9 — except when we’re winning. But even then, we still need one. I don’t get the change in tone.”
Henry’s Ideal Signing: Julian Alvarez
Henry also named the striker he believes Arsenal should pursue: Julian Alvarez. Now at Atletico Madrid after leaving Manchester City for £80 million, the Argentine forward impressed in his debut season in Spain with 29 goals and seven assists.
“He’s one of my favourite strikers right now. He’s versatile, hardworking, and plays with intensity. He doesn’t complain about fatigue, even after competing in tournaments like the Olympics and Copa America. I really admire him.”
Whether Arsenal can afford or convince Alvarez to join remains uncertain, but Henry is clear — to take the next step, Arsenal need a top-tier striker.
