During April’s Merseyside derby, Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister was on the receiving end of a dangerous challenge from Everton’s James Tarkowski. Surprisingly, the defender was only shown a yellow card—something PGMOL later admitted was a mistake.
Although Mac Allister accepted Tarkowski’s apology after the match, he’s now reflecting on just how serious the incident could have been.
“It could’ve snapped my leg in two places,” he said. “It’s unbelievable he wasn’t sent off. If my foot had been planted, it would’ve been a clean break.”
Mac Allister said he instantly knew the tackle was excessive. “What really got me was the expression on his face when he lunged in,” he added.
“I don’t think he meant to injure me, but I was definitely fortunate considering how hard he came in.”
