With the Reds set to report back to the AXA Training Centre in a month, anticipation was building for players to make their mark under new head coach Arne Slot. Liverpool’s first friendly is scheduled for July 13 against Preston, but Bajcetic’s participation is now uncertain following recent surgery.
As reported by the Liverpool Echo, the 20-year-old Spaniard underwent an operation to repair a hamstring injury he sustained in May while on loan at Las Palmas. His recovery timeline threatens to keep him sidelined for the duration of Liverpool’s pre-season activities.
Journalist Lewis Steele had previously noted that Slot was considering giving Bajcetic a fair shot during the summer, especially with the Community Shield clash against Crystal Palace on the horizon. But the midfielder’s injury has forced him to withdraw from Spain’s U21 European Championship squad, casting further doubt on his summer involvement.
Bajcetic has endured a frustrating run of injuries over the past two years. After a breakthrough during the 2022/23 campaign, an adductor injury severely limited his appearances. He joined Red Bull Salzburg on loan last season, but the spell was cut short following Pep Lijnders’ departure. He later joined Las Palmas, where his individual displays stood out despite the team’s relegation.
This summer was shaping up as a key opportunity for the young midfielder to fight for a place in Slot’s squad. While there’s still a chance he may recover in time for the club’s tour of the Far East later in July, his involvement remains uncertain.
