According to a well-informed source, Arne Slot appears to have given the green light for one Liverpool player to leave the club during the summer transfer window.
Federico Chiesa, Slot’s first signing at Anfield after arriving from Juventus last August for an initial £10 million (plus £2.5 million in potential add-ons), failed to make a notable impact in his debut season, despite Liverpool’s strong Premier League campaign. Speculation around his future is already mounting, with The Athletic suggesting that Liverpool’s owners, FSG, are open to offers, amid interest from Real Betis and Napoli.
Slot Reportedly Unconvinced by Chiesa’s Long-Term Role
Mick Brown, a former Manchester United scouting head with strong industry connections, told Football Insider that Slot is not fully sold on the Italian winger’s fit within his system. Consequently, Liverpool are reportedly prepared to entertain offers that would allow them to recoup their investment—or even make a slight profit.
“Liverpool are open to selling Chiesa,” Brown said. “He hasn’t lived up to expectations, and Slot doesn’t see him as a long-term piece. He was intended as a backup option but hasn’t featured much.”
“There are clubs showing interest, and Chiesa himself may be receptive to a move given his limited playing time.
“If Liverpool can recoup their £10 million fee—or turn a small profit—it might be wise to cash in now rather than risk a further decline in value if he continues to underperform.
“That said, keeping him remains on the table. He might still offer more to the squad than someone like Harvey Elliott in that role. But right now, it looks like they’re leaning toward a sale.”
Chiesa Could Still Prove His Worth
Given the relatively modest fee Liverpool paid, fans may not be too upset if the club gets their money back. But while Chiesa remains a fan favorite, he hasn’t delivered much on the pitch—just 466 minutes and two goals since his arrival.
If Slot doesn’t envision a consistent role for him next season, any offer over £10 million could be tough to turn down. Still, there’s an argument that Chiesa deserves more time to settle.
He arrived from Juventus following a spell of limited action, which affected his match sharpness. A full pre-season this summer could provide him a real opportunity to showcase his ability.
