Manchester United Make Surprise Move for Former Arsenal Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez Amid Barcelona Interest – Reports
Manchester United have reportedly begun efforts to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, formerly of Arsenal, as a potential replacement for Andre Onana.
According to ESPN Argentina, the Red Devils have initiated discussions with Martinez to agree on personal terms before approaching Aston Villa with a formal offer. The talks come at a time when Onana’s future at Old Trafford appears uncertain, following his vague comments about a possible exit amid rumors linking him to Saudi Arabian side Neom SC.
Journalist Leo Paradizo, who broke the story, revealed on ESPN via METRO:
“Negotiations are already underway. Manchester United is the most exciting option for Martinez right now. Although clubs will take time with the process, it’s confirmed that initial contact has been made.”
Meanwhile, Martinez has also been linked with Barcelona and clubs from the Saudi Pro League, further fueling speculation about his departure from Villa this summer.
Phil Jones, speaking with OLBG, urged United to go for Martinez, emphasizing the need for a goalkeeper upgrade. He said:
“I like him – he’s a very good keeper. David De Gea won us many games, and Martinez could be a top signing too. It all depends on whether United want experience or someone younger to develop.”
In other transfer news, United have completed the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves and are reportedly in talks to acquire Bryan Mbeumo from Tottenham.
