Fabrizio Romano provided an evening update on Hugo Ekitike that’s likely to catch the attention of Liverpool fans.
Following Florian Plettenberg’s Sunday report on X, which revealed that Liverpool, Manchester United, and Chelsea are all vying for the Eintracht Frankfurt striker, Romano added that the 22-year-old is still exploring his options and hasn’t shown a preference for any particular club yet.
Liverpool Keeping Tabs on Ekitike
On his YouTube channel, Romano mentioned that Darwin Nunez is “expected to leave” Liverpool this summer—despite opposition from some, like Stan Collymore. With that in mind, Liverpool’s owners, FSG, have already begun efforts to secure Ekitike as a replacement.
Romano stated:
“Ekitike is a serious target for Liverpool, especially with Nunez likely leaving. The club spoke with his representatives at the end of May and has maintained ongoing contact. Despite links to other clubs, don’t overlook Liverpool—they remain very much in the mix.”
Ekitike an Affordable Option Compared to Isak
With Manchester United now reportedly showing “serious interest” by contacting Ekitike’s camp, it’s encouraging for Liverpool fans that the club has already been in talks with the player’s agents.
If Nunez does depart this summer, Liverpool would be wise to line up a proper replacement before the transfer window closes. While Diogo Jota is talented, his injury history makes him an unreliable option over a full season.
Though journalist Lewis Steele argues that Ekitike isn’t quite at the level of Alexander Isak, the French striker would likely come at a significantly lower cost than the Newcastle forward. This is important given Liverpool’s recent £116m commitment to Florian Wirtz.
Liverpool’s consistent communication with Ekitike’s camp suggests the club is positioning itself to move quickly if the opportunity arises—especially if a starting striker slot opens up.
