Bayern Munich may be forced to abandon their pursuit of Athletic Bilbao and Spain winger Nico Williams, prompting them to explore other attacking options.
One of the names now on their radar is Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo — a potential setback for the Reds.
Gakpo played a vital role in Liverpool’s successful campaign under Arne Slot, tallying 18 goals and six assists across all competitions as the club secured the Premier League title.
Given his impressive form, it’s no surprise Bayern are now eyeing the Dutch international, particularly with their hopes of landing Williams fading. German journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that Bayern are tracking several alternatives.
On social media, Plettenberg revealed: “As reported yesterday, Joan Laporta is actively working to finalize a move for Nico Williams. Key factors include his discussions with Hansi Flick and the endorsement from Lamine Yamal, who has repeatedly expressed a desire to play alongside Williams — especially as part of his own contract talks. Meanwhile, Bayern remain alert in case Barcelona can’t afford the deal.”
He added that Bayern are still monitoring other targets, including Barcola, Mitoma, Leao — and Gakpo.
Why Liverpool Must Retain Gakpo
With Gakpo outperforming many of his peers statistically, Liverpool should make keeping him a priority this summer. The 26-year-old has impressed since arriving from PSV Eindhoven, and Arne Slot will want to maintain the core of his title-winning squad.
Following the recent departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold, further changes — such as losing Gakpo — could disrupt the team’s stability and momentum
