Liverpool fans have been advised to keep an eye on Aurelien Tchouameni — though not for reasons expected earlier this summer.
Despite the Reds currently targeting reinforcements at left-back and in attack, a potential move for the Real Madrid midfielder has surfaced unexpectedly and could be pivotal.
As reported by FourFourTwo, Liverpool may have received the go-ahead to pursue Tchouameni, with Marca suggesting he could be available for around £59 million — a notable drop from the £68.3 million Madrid paid in 2022.
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Madrid may be open to letting the French international leave, despite his reputation as one of the best young holding midfielders in Europe. The shift in approach may be influenced by new manager Xabi Alonso’s rich pool of midfield talent, including Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga, and possibly Trent Alexander-Arnold, who could move into a central role.
Tchouameni, who has even filled in at centre-back under former boss Carlo Ancelotti, may now be considered surplus in a crowded Madrid squad — rekindling Liverpool’s past interest in him.
That said, new manager Arne Slot is prioritizing other areas, with immediate focus on bolstering the left side of the defence and adding forward options. Talks are progressing, with Milos Kerkez pausing international duties amid strong links to Liverpool, and both Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz reportedly attracting Saudi interest — developments that could spur further moves.
Internally, Liverpool seem comfortable with their current defensive midfield options, including Ryan Gravenberch (who impressed in a deeper role last season), Wataru Endo, and Stefan Bajcetic. As a result, signing a new No.6 is no longer a pressing concern.
Still, the chance to land a player of Tchouameni’s caliber for under £60 million may prove too tempting — especially if his status at Madrid diminishes further after the Club World Cup.
Even if not a top priority, his age, versatility, and experience could make him a valuable asset. While Florian Wirtz remains a major target this summer, Liverpool may revisit Tchouameni’s situation later in the window depending on how things evolve at Madrid
