Scott Minto Questions Maresca’s Confidence in Chelsea Goalkeepers
Former Chelsea player Scott Minto has cast doubt on manager Enzo Maresca’s recent comments about being satisfied with his goalkeeping options.
Maresca, who guided Chelsea to a fourth-place Premier League finish and won the UEFA Conference League last season, claimed he’s content with his current goalkeepers. However, Chelsea’s previous pursuit of AC Milan’s Mike Maignan suggests otherwise. Minto, speaking on talkSPORT, said he doesn’t believe the club has truly moved on from the French international.
“They say they’re no longer chasing Maignan, but I’d be surprised if that’s true,” Minto said. “If Milan had lowered their price, Maignan would be a Chelsea player by now. That shows there’s doubt about the current goalkeepers.”
Chelsea currently rely on Robert Sanchez as their first-choice keeper, with Filip Jorgensen as backup. Despite Maresca’s public support for Sanchez, their interest in Maignan hints at underlying concerns. Additionally, Djordje Petrovic is reportedly being sold after being told he won’t be the starting goalkeeper next season.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Chelsea are still being offered other goalkeepers, implying they’re open to changes before the 2025/26 season kicks off.
Looking ahead, 19-year-old prospect Mike Penders is seen as part of Chelsea’s long-term plans. He’s currently with the squad at the Club World Cup but may need loan experience before becoming a regular.
Despite Maresca’s reassurances, signs point to an unsettled goalkeeping situation at Chelsea.
