Manchester United Eyes Dortmund Midfielder Felix Nmecha as Midfield Revamp Continues
Manchester United understands that signing Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo alone won’t be enough to seriously challenge the Premier League’s top teams in the 2025/26 season under coach Ruben Amorim. Therefore, the club is actively pursuing additional signings while the Mbeumo deal nears completion.
While names like Viktor Gyökeres and Hugo Ekitike have been mentioned, a new target has emerged: Felix Nmecha. According to German football journalist Christian Falk, Manchester United is showing strong interest in the Borussia Dortmund midfielder. Nmecha came up through Manchester City’s academy before moving to Wolfsburg and then joining Dortmund in 2023.
The 24-year-old has become a key player for Dortmund, with 68 appearances, 8 goals, and 5 assists over two seasons. His consistent performances have attracted Manchester United’s attention, especially following the departure of Christian Eriksen. United see Nmecha as a player who can bring energy, versatility, and tactical awareness to their midfield.
Despite missing some time last season due to a ligament injury, Nmecha still maintained a solid performance rating. He is currently representing Dortmund in the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup in the U.S., where he recently scored in a thrilling 4-3 victory against Mamelodi Sundowns. Former Dortmund manager Nuri Sahin praised him as “exceptional,” highlighting his value to the club.
However, Dortmund is not currently considering any offers for Nmecha, viewing him as a central part of their midfield alongside Marcel Sabitzer and Emre Can, especially after spending €30 million on him just last year. Having already lost talents like Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho, Dortmund is keen to keep Nmecha.
Nevertheless, Manchester United’s pursuit of Nmecha fits into a broader strategy by owners iNeOS to build a cohesive squad capable of executing Amorim’s high-press, high-energy style. Nmecha’s ball-carrying, pressing, and transitional play make him a perfect fit.
If Dortmund continue to block a transfer, United may turn their attention to similar midfielders like Youssouf Fofana (Monaco), Khephren Thuram (Nice), or Manu Koné (Borussia Mönchengladbach), who fit the club’s vision of a physically strong and technically skilled midfield core.
