Spanish authorities have issued an updated statement concerning the tragic car crash that claimed the lives of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva.
The deadly accident occurred early Thursday morning in Zamora, northwestern Spain, as the brothers were traveling to Santander. Investigators revealed that a tyre blowout during an overtaking maneuver caused the vehicle to veer off the road and catch fire. Both men died at the scene.
“At around 12:30 AM on the A-52 motorway, near kilometre 65 in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora, a car left the roadway—likely due to a tyre burst while overtaking—leading to a fire that resulted in the deaths of both occupants,” the police statement noted.
The brothers were laid to rest on Saturday in their hometown of Gondomar, near Porto, after a wake. The burial was attended by several of Jota’s teammates from Liverpool and the Portuguese national team.
