Ryan Giggs Backs Rúben Amorim’s Man United Project but Warns of Challenges Ahead
Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has thrown his support behind new manager Rúben Amorim, applauding his disciplined leadership, tactical bravery, and structured style of play. However, Giggs cautioned that restoring United’s former glory won’t be easy.
Speaking to Webby & O’Neill in May 2025, Giggs praised Amorim’s commitment to his trademark 3-4-2-1 formation, a setup that brought him success at Sporting Lisbon with three league titles. Still, Giggs emphasized that significant tactical and personnel changes will be required at United to make the system work.
“Rúben has presence and a clear vision,” said Giggs. “But he’ll need time, multiple transfer windows, and insight into what defines a true United player.”
System Overhaul and Squad Challenges
Amorim’s tactics rely on a back three, dynamic wing-backs, and two advanced playmakers—roles that demand tactical intelligence and adaptability. Giggs pointed out that this is a big shift from the formations used under Erik ten Hag.
“As a former winger, I can admit this system isn’t ideal for traditional wide men,” he quipped.
He suggested that players like Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo could be adapted to wing-back roles, but admitted that proper recruitment will be critical.
The team currently lacks the right profile of players to execute Amorim’s strategy. Their disastrous 2024/25 season, which ended in a 15th-place finish and a Europa League final loss to Tottenham, exposed those limitations—costing the club a potential £100 million in Champions League revenue.
Financial Woes Add to Rebuilding Task
United’s financial issues are another obstacle. After recording a £113 million loss in 2023/24, and with added expenses from sacking Ten Hag and hiring Amorim, the club must make tough calls. Giggs believes underperforming players like Rashford, Sancho, Antony, and Malacia should be sold.
Although Rashford, currently on loan at Aston Villa, has shown some form, Giggs hinted that a fresh start might be best.
“He didn’t look like he was enjoying his football at United,” he observed.
Signs of Promise and the Need for Patience
Despite the setbacks, Giggs remains optimistic. He pointed to strong performances against top sides such as Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City as positive signs of what Amorim could achieve.
He singled out players like Lisandro Martínez, Manuel Ugarte, and Amad Diallo as well-suited to Amorim’s high-energy, tactically demanding style.
“Success will depend on smart, system-oriented recruitment,” he said. “You need athletic, intelligent players.”
The Road Ahead
Giggs concluded by saying that Amorim could restore Manchester United’s identity—but only if he gets the full backing of the board and proper player investment.
“If the club truly supports him, Rúben can re-establish the kind of football identity that’s been missing at United.”
