Benfica’s £34m Star Chooses Liverpool Over Man Utd as Slot Eyes Midfield Reunion
Arne Slot is aiming to reunite with a familiar face from his Feyenoord days, with reports suggesting the player in question prefers a move to Liverpool despite interest from other top clubs.
Liverpool Targeting Kokcu Reunion Under Slot
New Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes is spearheading a major squad overhaul this summer, following a title-winning campaign under Arne Slot. So far, the Reds have spent over £180 million on key signings including Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Armin Pecsi, and Freddie Woodman.
While efforts continue to strengthen both defence and attack—especially with Jarell Quansah leaving and Darwin Nunez possibly on his way out—midfield is also a priority. Reports from CaughtOffside reveal that Slot is eyeing a reunion with former Feyenoord captain Orkun Kokcu, who now plays for Benfica.
Kokcu was instrumental during Slot’s tenure in the Eredivisie and could be a key addition to Liverpool’s midfield. He had a standout season at Benfica in 2023/24, scoring 12 goals and providing eight assists, plus two more assists at the Club World Cup. Benfica are open to selling the 24-year-old for around €40 million (£34m)—a price Liverpool can afford.
Although Manchester United, Tottenham, and Inter Milan are also interested, sources say Kokcu favours a move to Anfield.
Slot Wants More Midfield Depth
Slot already relies on Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister in central midfield, with Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo providing depth. Florian Wirtz is expected to challenge Dominik Szoboszlai in the attacking midfield role, but Slot still seeks a deeper-lying, versatile midfielder—something Kokcu offers.
Kokcu has spoken highly of Slot in the past, calling him “the best coach in the world,” which could help Liverpool land him ahead of rivals.
Zubimendi: The One That Got Away
Liverpool were previously close to signing Martin Zubimendi, but the Spaniard opted to join Arsenal instead this summer. Upon joining the Gunners, Zubimendi said their playing style and youthful ambition made the decision easy.

While the Reds are still hunting for a new centre-back and striker, Kokcu’s potential arrival would further strengthen their midfield setup. With the manager’s backing, the player’s desire, and a feasible fee, this deal could move quickly in the coming weeks.
