Liverpool and Real Madrid Eye Potential Swap Deal to Solve Key Squad Issu
Liverpool are preparing to defend their Premier League crown after a dominant 2024/25 season under new manager Arne Slot, which saw them lift their 20th English league title.
The Reds have already been busy in the summer transfer window, bringing in several new faces: Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong arrived from Bayer Leverkusen, goalkeeper Freddie Woodman joined from Preston North End, and left-back Milos Kerkez signed from Bournemouth.
However, their transfer activity isn’t over yet. According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Liverpool have approached Newcastle United over the potential signing of striker Alexander Isak, though no formal bid has been submitted.
Meanwhile, over in Spain, Real Madrid are undergoing a period of transition. With Carlo Ancelotti stepping aside, former midfield maestro Xabi Alonso has taken over as manager. Los Blancos have also been active in the market, securing the services of Trent Alexander-Arnold, young defender Dean Huijsen, and ex-Manchester United full-back Alvaro Carreras.
Despite already doing business together for Alexander-Arnold’s transfer, Liverpool and Madrid could be in line for another major deal — one that may benefit both clubs by addressing key positional needs.
A potential swap involving Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konaté and Real Madrid winger Rodrygo is beginning to gain traction. On Monday, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed on DAZN that Real Madrid are keen to sign Konaté, possibly targeting him as a free agent when his Liverpool contract expires in June 2026.
Romano stated:
“Real Madrid are working on a potential deal for Ibrahima Konaté in 2026. They are monitoring the situation closely and have already made initial contact to learn more about his availability.”
Although no official proposal has been made yet, Madrid’s interest is genuine. Konaté, who helped Liverpool secure the league title last season, could be seen as a long-term defensive reinforcement at the Bernabéu.
On the flip side, 24-year-old Brazilian forward Rodrygo, whose contract at Real runs until 2028, has been the subject of exit rumours — with Arsenal and Chelsea previously linked. His value is reportedly around €100 million (£86.6m), and his reduced role under Ancelotti last season has sparked speculation about a fresh start.
While no credible sources have confirmed that a Konaté-Rodrygo swap is under serious discussion, the idea is being floated as a logical solution for both sides. Madrid may demand additional funds to balance the deal, given Rodrygo’s higher market value and longer contract.
For now, it’s just speculation — but it’s a scenario that could gain momentum if both clubs decide to address their respective needs in one bold move.
