The 2025 summer transfer window was packed with surprises, but few stirred as much buzz as the battle for Slovenian star Benjamin Šeško. For weeks, the 21-year-old striker was at the centre of a fierce tug-of-war, with Newcastle United going all out to secure his signature — even putting forward a staggering proposal worth three times his current salary.
Despite the tempting offer and a clear promise of being a central figure in Newcastle’s project, Šeško shocked the football world by signing for Manchester United instead.
In his first detailed interview since the move, the forward revealed the real reason behind his decision — and it had nothing to do with the money.
“Newcastle genuinely tried everything,” Šeško said with a mix of appreciation and candour. “They offered me triple my wages, showed me their vision, and explained my role in their future. It was all very tempting… but there was one thing I couldn’t overlook.”
For Šeško, that “one thing” was the pull of history and the chance to etch his name alongside football’s greatest icons.
“When I stepped into Old Trafford for the first time, it felt different,” he explained. “This is where legends are made — Ronaldo, Rooney, Cantona. I pictured myself scoring here, hearing 75,000 fans roar my name. Newcastle’s offer was incredible, and I have huge respect for their project, but this move… this was about more than money. It was about destiny.”
