“Mike Dean: Referee’s Costly First-Half Error Will Have Arne Slot Seeing Red”

Mike Dean believes Liverpool were victims of a major refereeing error during the early stages of their match against Fulham today.

Issa Diop was given a yellow card for a reckless challenge on Andy Robertson, who was later sent off for a foul as the last man. However, controversy escalated moments later.

Andreas Pereira caught Ryan Gravenberch on the back of his ankle as the Liverpool midfielder advanced. Referee Tony Harrington issued only a yellow card, but replays showed Pereira was fortunate not to receive a red.

Dean: Pereira Should Have Been Sent Off

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, Dean was clear on the incident, saying (15:14): “Pereira caught Gravenberch on the top of his Achilles and dragged down. He was nowhere near the ball. He knew exactly what he was doing. It’s 100% a red card.”

Dean’s Outrage Is Justified—and Liverpool’s Problems Deepened

Dean’s assessment is accurate—Pereira’s tackle was reckless and dangerous, posing a risk of serious injury. Fortunately, Gravenberch wasn’t hurt, but the injustice was compounded when Pereira scored shortly after, deflecting Antonee Robinson’s cross off Robertson into the net.

Liverpool’s defending was slow, and their first-half performance lacked urgency. However, the greater frustration lies in the fact that Pereira, who should have been sent off, played a key role in the goal.

Adding to Liverpool’s woes, Robertson’s red card leaves Arne Slot with a major issue at left-back, as Kostas Tsimikas remains sidelined through injury. Robertson’s absence could impact the next three matches, creating a significant selection dilemma.

Once again, a Premier League match has been overshadowed by questionable refereeing decisions, with officials, not players, dominating the post-match conversation.
