Liverpool’s Young Forward Koumas Seals Loan Switch to Birmingham City Amid Summer Exodus
Liverpool’s summer clear-out continues as promising forward Lewis Koumas is set to depart Anfield for a season-long loan at Birmingham City. The move makes Koumas the latest in a string of young Reds to seek opportunities elsewhere, with Birmingham—fresh off their Championship promotion—winning the race for his signature.
At just 19 years old, Koumas has already attracted significant attention across England. Both Birmingham City and Wrexham initially pushed for a permanent deal, reflecting the youngster’s growing stock after his spell at Stoke City last season. Sheffield United, long-time admirers of the Wales international, also tabled a serious offer, while clubs like Norwich City, Preston North End, and Hull City were monitoring the situation closely.
Despite multiple options, Koumas opted for Birmingham, a club with renewed ambition and growing spotlight—partly due to the involvement of NFL legend Tom Brady, who holds a minority stake. The Midlands side sees Koumas as a key addition in their bid to cement themselves in the Championship following promotion.
For Liverpool, the move marks another chapter in a busy transfer window dominated by outgoing deals. Koumas will be the sixth player to head out on loan this summer, joining the likes of Luca Stephenson (Dundee United), Vitezslav Jaros (Ajax), Owen Beck (Derby County), Harvey Davies (Crawley Town), and Isaac Mabaya, who briefly joined Wigan before injury curtailed his spell. James Norris also secured a move to Irish side Shelbourne earlier this year.
Koumas first announced himself on the big stage in February 2024, scoring on his senior Liverpool debut in an FA Cup victory against Southampton. He later featured on the bench in Liverpool’s League Cup triumph over Chelsea. His development continued at Stoke, where he amassed 49 appearances and broke into the Wales national team, earning six caps.
As he now prepares for a new challenge in Birmingham, the question is whether this loan will act as the stepping stone toward a permanent move—or as the spark that propels him back into contention at Anfield. Either way, all eyes will be on how Koumas adapts in a side looking to re-establish itself in England’s second tier.
