Freshly crowned the Best Player of the Year at the FIFA The Best 2024 ceremony, Vinícius Júnior has come under sharp criticism from Rafa Alkorta Martínez. At 24, the Brazilian remains a polarizing figure, even among Real Madrid fans.
Over the past few months, Vinícius has found himself at the center of media scrutiny, largely due to what many perceive as inappropriate behavior, including his impulsive reactions toward referees and opponents.
Following Real Madrid’s 3-3 draw with Rayo Vallecano in La Liga, Vinícius once again made headlines for his outbursts directed at the referee and the home fans. Former referee Mateu Lahoz expressed his disapproval of the incident, and Rafa Alkorta, a former Real Madrid defender, did not hold back in his criticism of the winger’s behavior.
“His behaviour is unacceptable,” Alkorta said, echoing Sami Khedira’s earlier comments urging Vinícius to address his temperament to avoid jeopardizing his career. Alkorta, who played for Real Madrid between 1993 and 1997, was clear in his message.
Speaking shortly after Vinícius was honored at the FIFA ceremony, Alkorta called for the club to intervene, highlighting that the Brazilian cannot afford to let his emotions dictate his performances. “I think the club will need to step in at some point. I’m sure everyone, especially Ancelotti, has tried everything, but it’s crucial to make him understand that, with all his talent, he is a role model for many children, and his behavior is not appropriate,” Alkorta said in an interview on El Larguero.
This sentiment is growing within the Madrid camp, especially after Vinícius was overlooked for the 2024 Ballon d’Or, with many attributing the snub to his conduct on and off the pitch.
While his talent is undeniable, his lack of fair play has raised concerns, with some pointing to it as a significant factor in the jury’s decision. With several high-profile figures urging him to improve his behavior, it may be time for Vinícius to temper his fiery temperament.
