With the transfer window closing in a few days, Alexander Isak has made his stance clear—he wants to join Liverpool. Reports suggest that Newcastle officials visited the striker at his home, and before Newcastle’s clash with Liverpool, he also held discussions with representatives from the Public Investment Fund and club co-owner Jamie Reuben about his future at St. James’ Park.
Earlier this month, Newcastle rejected a £110 million bid from Premier League champions Liverpool for Isak. That decision is said to have left the striker frustrated. Shortly after, the 25-year-old released a statement accusing Newcastle of breaking promises related to a possible move to Anfield.
“Promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time,” Isak said. “To now act as if these issues are only just arising is misleading. Once trust is broken and promises are not kept, the relationship can’t continue.”
Just a week later, Isak has again expressed his desire to leave before the transfer window shuts and remains determined to secure a switch to Liverpool. According to The Telegraph, he is prepared to go on strike to force the move, having already missed matches against Aston Villa and Liverpool.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are reportedly considering a second bid but are waiting for Newcastle’s board to show openness to negotiations. However, the Merseyside club is unwilling to meet Newcastle’s £150 million valuation unless there is a genuine possibility of reaching an agreement.
Newcastle, on the other hand, have strongly denied Isak’s claims of broken promises. In their response, the club expressed disappointment at his statement and insisted that no official had ever guaranteed he would be allowed to leave this summer.
“Alex remains under contract, and we’ve been clear that no agreement was made allowing him to depart,” Newcastle stated. The club added that while players’ views are respected, decisions must be taken in the best interests of the team, the club, and its supporters.
They concluded: “We are a proud football club with a strong sense of tradition and family. Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates.”
