Jamie Carragher believes that while Virgil van Dijk is undoubtedly one of the best centre-backs in the world, younger defenders shouldn’t try to replicate his style of play. Carragher argues that van Dijk’s exceptional natural talent makes him a unique player, and it’s unrealistic for typical centre-backs to emulate him.
“As a young centre-back, I wouldn’t base my game on Virgil van Dijk because he’s an exceptional talent, too good for anyone to copy,” Carragher said in an interview with The Tactical Times on Patreon.
“His physical attributes—his size, speed, strength, and how effortlessly he controls the ball—are innate qualities. You can’t train for that; it’s something he was born with.”
Carragher even added that van Dijk could perform at his level with minimal effort: “Van Dijk could play with a cigar and still be fine.”
Van Dijk is currently recovering from a knee injury, with the hope that he’ll be fit enough to join Liverpool’s pre-season preparations.
