Liverpool have officially secured the signing of Swedish striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United in a British-record transfer deal.
The 24-year-old forward had been manager Arne Slot’s primary target this summer as the Premier League champions looked to strengthen their attacking options. Isak has agreed to a six-year contract at Anfield, with Liverpool paying £125 million to Newcastle. After waiving a solidarity payment, the total amount received by the Magpies rises to £130 million.
Considered by some as one of the best strikers in the world, Isak was determined to make the move to Merseyside. Earlier in the transfer window, he requested permission to explore options outside St. James’ Park. Liverpool’s initial £110 million offer was rejected, with Newcastle insisting he was not for sale.
The situation escalated when Isak refused to train or play for Newcastle, later issuing a public statement accusing the club of breaking promises. This ultimately made his departure inevitable.
At Liverpool, Isak will don the iconic No. 9 shirt. Following the completion of the deal, he spoke to the club’s official website, expressing his excitement at joining the Reds.
This marks Liverpool’s second record-breaking signing of the summer, following the £116 million acquisition of German star Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.
Isak is joining a wave of new arrivals under Slot, including Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Hugo Ekitike, and Giovanni Leoni. The squad reshaping may continue, with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi expected to complete a Deadline Day medical soon.
