Gabriel Martinelli’s dip in form has become a growing concern at Arsenal, with questions resurfacing about Mikel Arteta’s management. Yet, the winger’s struggles cannot solely be pinned on coaching. Under Arteta, most players have continued to progress, suggesting Martinelli’s decline is more individual than tactical.
Despite his downturn, Arsenal’s overall style has remained consistent. The team still creates and concedes a similar number of chances, maintaining back-to-back second-place league finishes—even during last season’s injury-hit campaign.
The turning point for Martinelli may have been the arrival of Leandro Trossard in January 2023. Originally signed to cover for the injured Gabriel Jesus, Trossard quickly became a regular, limiting Martinelli’s guaranteed starts. Instead of rising to the challenge, the Brazilian has struggled to adapt.
His decision-making in the final third continues to hold him back. Too often, Martinelli drives forward with his head down, missing key passing opportunities. A notable example came at Anfield, when a promising run could have set up Viktor Gyökeres, but instead ended with a wasted chance.
Looking ahead, Arsenal face a dilemma. If Martinelli is sold next summer, with only one year left on his contract and an option to extend, the club is unlikely to command the £60 million valuation once linked to him. Unless the issue is resolved, Arsenal risk losing both value and impact from a player once seen as central to their future.
