Alexander Isak has officially become the most expensive signing in Premier League history, sealing a £125 million transfer from Newcastle United to Liverpool.
Reports indicate that Chelsea had tried to tempt the Swedish striker to Stamford Bridge earlier in the summer. However, Isak had already decided that his future lay at Anfield and made Liverpool his priority destination.
The 25-year-old forward had been contemplating a departure from Newcastle since April. As negotiations dragged on, his frustration grew, leading him to publicly push for a move. That persistence eventually paid off, resulting in a record-breaking £125m deal, setting a new benchmark in British football transfers.
Chelsea had been busy at the start of the window, securing Liam Delap from Ipswich for £30m and João Pedro from Brighton for £60m. Alongside those additions, the London club also contacted Isak’s representatives, but the striker’s camp made it clear he was only interested in Liverpool.
According to The Athletic, Liverpool became aware of Isak’s desire to join them as early as May. While the Reds were initially cautious due to the massive financial commitment, Isak’s determination intensified after the club signed Hugo Ekitiké, which seemingly pushed him to accelerate his exit from Newcastle.
Ultimately, Isak’s persistence secured him a dream Deadline Day switch to Anfield. He is expected to make his debut for Liverpool on September 14 against Burnley.
As for Chelsea, their new attacking signings have made a positive impact. João Pedro has already scored five goals and provided two assists in six games, while Delap impressed before being sidelined by an injury just before the international break.
